Believe it or not, your Africa safari suddenly becomes real when you start packing for your adventure. You’ll be imagining yourself in different scenes: on game drives, framing your camera to catch a big cat, sitting around a campfire or boma after a day of safari action; settling down in your lodge or tent with visions of the next day’s journey.
First things first: if you’re going to be flying in-country on light aircraft, your baggage will be limited to a maximum weight of 15 kilograms (33 lbs.) including your camera gear. Any additional luggage can be stored in your hotel in Nairobi.
What do you pack to make sure you’re comfortable for each of these settings?
Safari packing tips
Before we get into specific items, let’s cover some general packing tips for a safari:
Keep essentials in your hand luggage: passports, documentation, medication, Kenyan shilling, credit cards – also include valuables like your camera and binoculars if you can.
Divide your luggage: If you’re travelling with a partner, split your clothes and essentials between your bags. That way, if one suitcase is delayed or lost, you’ll still have what you need.
Pack minimal jewellery: Keep it simple and safe. Anything valuable should stay close and in sight.
Pack a first aid kit: plasters, bite relief cream, antiseptic cream, painkillers, Imodium and allergy relief tablets can make all the difference in making your safari adventure comfortable, whatever the climate.
Use a shoulder bag or money belt: These provide extra storage for your essentials while out and about.
Avoid plastic bags: Supermarket-style plastic bags are banned in Kenya. Use reusable fabric bags instead.
